The Loren L. Zachary Society is a non-profit California corporation, founded in 1972 by the late Loren L. Zachary and Nedra Zachary, for the purpose of furthering the careers of young opera singers by sponsoring a National Vocal Competition. Mayors Tom Bradley ('82), Richard Riordan ('97) and James K. Hahn ('02) have commended the Society for their "outstanding efforts to foster an environment dedicated to excellence and the promotion of young opera singers," and for their "spirit and interest which made the City of Los Angeles a better place in which to live." In 2003 the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles and Wells Fargo praised the Loren L. Zachary for "their role in developing young opera singers and preserving and promoting opera as an art form," and for their "invaluable service provided in the community."

OperaWorks (www.operaworks.com) In July of 2009, Joe joined the Board of Directors for Opera Works, which is nationally recognized for innovation and excellence in opera training and performance. Under the guidance of Founder and Executive Director Ann Baltz and prestigious faculty, OperaWorks now offers four Summer Intensive Programs in Los Angeles and workshops and master classes throughout the United States. In 2006, Lightsong Films filmed the documentary Sing*ularity, to capture OperaWorks unique holistic method of training singers. Graduates from OperaWorks programs can be heard throughout the world in opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala, as soloists with orchestras and in concert. While the organization's main focus is educational, performances are a vital part of the OperaWorks mission and include recitals, showcase concerts, improvised operas, and concert operas. Audiences can hear outstanding singers in a variety of exciting productions designed to offer an alternative to traditional opera performances.
